Most post-liposuction discomfort follows a predictable downhill slope. The signals worth acting on are the ones that break that slope — heat that rises, pain that sharpens, redness that travels.

Signals that break the normal curve

A mild temperature bump in the first day or two can accompany ordinary inflammation, but a fever above 38°C, chills, or a fever that first appears after day three points toward infection and needs a same-day clinic call. The same urgency applies to pain that intensifies rather than eases after the third day, one-sided severe pain, an incision turning hot and red with thick discharge, or swelling that suddenly balloons in one spot.

Symptom expression differs between individuals — some infections announce themselves quietly — so the threshold for calling should stay low; clinics expect these calls. Calf pain or swelling in one leg, chest pain, or sudden shortness of breath belongs in an emergency department immediately, and for everything short of that, a prompt specialist review beats waiting for the next scheduled visit.
