When can alcohol return after liposuction?

Most clinics advise none while medication continues and roughly two weeks of abstinence, longer if swelling is still active.

Alcohol widens blood vessels, thins hydration, and interacts with painkillers and antibiotics — three effects that run directly against early liposuction recovery. The question is not whether to pause, but for how long.

Why the pause matters, and how long

While prescription painkillers or antibiotics continue, alcohol is off the table — the combination stresses the liver and can amplify sedation. Beyond medication, alcohol dilates vessels and worsens both swelling and bruising, so a common guideline is about two weeks of abstinence, extending it if the treated area is still visibly swollen or drainage recently stopped.

Alcohol tolerance and healing speed differ by individual, and the first drink back is best kept light while watching how the area responds overnight. Events that cannot be moved — a wedding, a work dinner — are worth raising at a consult in advance so the timeline can be planned rather than improvised.
