Is Facial Numbness Normal After a Facelift?
Temporary numbness around the cheeks and ears is an expected part of healing and usually resolves over weeks to months.
Lifting facial tissue means small sensory nerve branches in the skin are stretched or interrupted, so patches of numbness over the cheeks, in front of the ears, and along the jaw are an expected finding — not a surprise complication. Sensation typically returns gradually over weeks to months, often announced by tingling or itching, and the timetable varies a great deal between individuals.
Numb skin needs protecting — and watching
While sensation is dulled, the skin cannot warn you about heat or friction. Keep hair dryers at a distance, test water temperature with your hand first, and be careful with heating pads and curling irons near the face. Odd sensations — crawling, zaps, oversensitivity — during recovery are usually nerves waking up, not getting worse.
Numbness in skin sensation is different from weakness in facial movement. If you cannot raise an eyebrow, close an eye fully, or smile evenly — or if numbness shows no change at all after several months — consult your specialist for a proper evaluation, and report any persistent new pain in a numb area.
