When Can I Wash My Hair After a Facelift?

Many surgeons allow a first gentle shampoo two to four days after surgery, once dressings come off — with technique mattering as much as timing.

Hairline incisions make shampooing a real question after a facelift. Many surgeons permit a first gentle wash two to four days after surgery, once the initial dressing is removed, while others prefer waiting until the first follow-up. The right day depends on your incision plan and drain status, so it varies case by case.

A first-shampoo routine that protects the incisions

Use lukewarm — never hot — water, a mild shampoo, and fingertip pressure only, keeping nails away from the suture lines. Rinse by letting water flow over the scalp rather than aiming a strong jet at the incisions, and dry with cool air, holding the dryer well away from numb skin that cannot feel heat.

A helper or a salon-style backward wash keeps you from bending forward, which can throb in the first week. Individual healing differs, so confirm your start date with your surgeon, and consult the clinic if washing leaves the incision line stinging, oozing, or newly reddened for more than a day.
