Why does pigmentation sometimes appear after a procedure?

Any treatment that briefly inflames skin — laser, peels, even injections — can prompt pigment cells to overproduce melanin as part of the healing response. The result, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, shows up as brownish patches weeks after the treated area seemed to be recovering well.

Who is more prone, and what prevents it

Deeper skin tones, unprotected sun exposure during recovery, and picking at crusts or flakes all raise the odds. Consistent broad-spectrum sun protection and leaving healing skin untouched are the two levers that matter most; many cases then fade gradually over months.

How likely pigmentation is, and how fast it fades, varies widely between individuals. Patches that persist, darken, or spread are a reason to see the treating clinic — a specialist can distinguish the type of pigment change and discuss management options in person.
