Why is sunscreen so important after laser?

Freshly treated skin reacts more strongly to UV, and sun protection is the main defense against post-laser dark spots.

Laser treatment temporarily thins the skin’s outer defenses while it renews. In that state, ultraviolet exposure can trigger pigment cells more easily, which is why sunscreen is the most repeated line in laser aftercare sheets.

Building the protection routine

Standard advice is a broad-spectrum sunscreen reapplied through the day, supported by hats and shade, and continued for weeks after the visible redness fades. Skipping protection during this window is a common route to new pigmentation on treated areas.

How long heightened sensitivity lasts differs by laser type and by individual skin tone, so the protection period should follow the treating clinic’s plan. Anyone noticing darkening despite sunscreen can bring it up at a follow-up consultation early.
