Are breast cancer screenings still accurate with implants?
Implants hide some tissue on a mammogram, but adapted technique keeps screening worthwhile.
An implant sits behind or in front of the chest muscle and can block part of the X-ray view. Screening programs have long adjusted for this, so having an implant is not a reason to skip breast cancer checks.
How screening adapts
Displacement views recover much of the hidden tissue, and ultrasound or MRI can supplement the mammogram when density or implant position limits what the X-ray shows.
Residual blind spots vary by individual, which is why women with implants are encouraged to keep regular screening intervals and discuss any supplemental imaging with a breast care specialist.
