Is Tanning Okay After Breast Augmentation?

Sun and tanning beds cannot reach the implant, but they can permanently darken an immature scar — most advice shields scars for six to twelve months.

Tanning after augmentation is really two questions. Heat and UV do nothing to the implant itself, sitting well below the skin; the scar is the vulnerable part, because healing tissue makes pigment erratically when UV hits it.

Tan the body, shield the scar

Sunbathing and tanning beds are usually discouraged until incisions are fully closed, and scars themselves stay covered — tape, swimwear or sunscreen — for six to twelve months while they mature. Numbness is the sneaky variable: chest skin sensation returns at different speeds for different people, and skin that cannot feel heat burns quietly.

Self-tanner is the workaround many surgeons accept once incisions have sealed — colour without UV — though it is wise to patch-test away from the scar first. If your scar line will sit outside a swimsuit, ask at a consultation how to cover it through a beach season.
