How are old laminate veneers taken off?
The ceramic is sectioned and lifted under magnification; some clinics soften the bond with a laser first.
Veneers are resin-bonded to enamel, so they cannot simply be pried off. Removal is a controlled cutting procedure designed to sacrifice the ceramic while protecting the tooth surface underneath.
The removal sequence
Typically a fine bur cuts a groove through the ceramic, the pieces are flaked away, and the residual cement is polished off the enamel. Er:YAG laser debonding, offered in some clinics, weakens the resin so larger fragments lift with less drilling. Local anesthesia is often used for comfort.
Removal time and difficulty vary with the cement used and the ceramic thickness, so no two cases run identically. Ask the dentist beforehand how the enamel will be protected and what happens immediately after removal.
