Why is a rubber dam used during veneer bonding?
The thin rubber sheet isolates the teeth from saliva and breath moisture, which is critical because adhesive bonding fails when the field gets contaminated.
Veneer cementation is moisture-sensitive chemistry. A rubber dam — or an equivalent isolation setup — keeps saliva, blood, and humid breath away from the etched enamel during the minutes that decide bond strength.
What isolation changes
Etched enamel and primed ceramic must stay clean and dry while the resin cement sets; even brief saliva contact weakens the bond and can shorten the veneer’s service life. The dam also shields the throat from etching gel and small instruments, adding a safety layer during a detailed procedure.
Some patients find the sheet odd at first, and tolerance varies by individual; clinics may use liquid dam or retractor-based isolation where a full dam is impractical. If you are claustrophobic about it, consult the dentist about the isolation plan before bonding day.
