Between preparation and final bonding, teeth wear provisional veneers held with weak temporary cement. Because the cement is deliberately weak, provisionals sometimes come off — the issue is that the prepared tooth underneath is sensitive and needs protection.
Why a lost provisional still needs a call
An exposed prepared tooth can sting with air and cold, stain quickly, and — more importantly — drift slightly within days. Even small movement can change how the final veneer seats, so clinics prefer to recement provisionals promptly rather than leave teeth uncovered.
Save the provisional if you have it, avoid chewing on that side, and do not use household glue. Tooth sensitivity and drift speed vary by individual, so call your dentist the same day — recementing is quick, and it protects the fit of the final restoration.
