Soft tissue is the other long conversation. Bone provides the shelf that cheeks and jowls rest on, so reducing it can, in some patients, contribute to soft-tissue descent over time — a reason surgeons weigh age, skin elasticity and the degree of reduction together rather than maximizing the cut. Cheekbone fixation also needs to heal solidly, as inadequate union can affect the contour.

Swelling is the dominant feature of recovery: the first two weeks are the most visible, a compression garment is often worn, and a soft diet protects the intraoral incisions. Most people return to desk work within one to two weeks, but the final contour emerges gradually as deep swelling resolves over three to six months — a recovery period subject to marked individual variation.
