Dark Circles Come in Three Types — and Each Needs a Different Fix

Pigment, shadow-casting structure and visible vessels each darken the under-eye by a different mechanism, which is why one remedy rarely fits all.

Dark circles are usually discussed as a single complaint, but clinicians sort them into three broad types: pigmented, structural and vascular. Each darkens the under-eye through a different mechanism — melanin in the skin, shadows cast by contours, or vessels showing through thin tissue.

The distinction is practical, not academic. A cream aimed at pigment does nothing for a shadow, and a filler aimed at a shadow does nothing for vessels — so identifying the dominant type, often a mix in real faces, is the first step before spending on any treatment.

Pigmented type: color that sits in the skin

Pigmented dark circles are brownish and stay dark regardless of lighting or angle. Chronic rubbing from allergies or atopic skin, sun exposure and post-inflammatory pigmentation are common drivers, and the tone often extends onto the upper lid as well.

A quick self-test helps: gently stretch the under-eye skin — if the darkness moves with the skin, pigment is likely involved. Approaches center on stopping the trigger, daily sun protection, brightening agents and, in some cases, pigment-targeted laser sessions, all of which work gradually and with individual variation in response.

Structural type: a shadow, not a stain

Structural dark circles are shadows cast by contour — a sunken tear trough, protruding under-eye fat, or both creating a valley that overhead light cannot reach. The telltale sign: they deepen under downlighting and soften or vanish when light hits the face straight on, or when the skin is stretched flat.

Because the problem is shape, the answers are shape-based: filling the trough with hyaluronic acid filler, or surgically repositioning bulging fat into the hollow for longer-standing correction. Both carry a possibility of side effects — irregularity, swelling, and rarely vascular complications with filler — so technique and injector qualifications matter more here than in most cosmetic treatments.

Vascular type — and why diagnosis comes first

Vascular dark circles look bluish or purplish because the under-eye skin — the thinnest on the body — lets the vessel network beneath show through. They worsen visibly with fatigue, poor sleep, nasal congestion and allergies, and improve somewhat when circulation improves, which is why mornings often look worse than evenings.

Management leans on the underlying drivers — sleep, allergy control, nasal breathing — plus options that thicken or camouflage the overlying skin, since the vessels themselves are normal anatomy. Real-world dark circles usually blend two or three types, and the blend shifts with age; a consultation with a board-certified dermatologist or plastic surgeon, and a realistic recovery period for any procedure chosen, beats guessing at the pharmacy shelf.

Find your type first

  • Stretch test: does the darkness move with the skin (pigment) or flatten away (structure)?
  • Lighting test: does it deepen only under overhead light? Think shadow, not stain.
  • Color check: brownish points to pigment, bluish-purple to vessels.
  • Track triggers for two weeks — sleep, allergies, screen time, rubbing habits.
  • Bring your observations to a specialist before paying for any treatment plan.
