Can I sleep face down after blepharoplasty?

Not during early recovery — face-down sleeping raises pressure and swelling around healing eyelids, so stay on your back for at least the first two weeks.

Face-down and side sleeping both press the eye area into the pillow and let fluid pool in the face overnight. During the first weeks after eyelid surgery, that combination can worsen morning swelling and even tug on the incision line. Back sleeping with the head elevated is the recommended default.

How to stay on your back

Habitual stomach sleepers can hem themselves in with pillows on both sides or use a travel neck pillow to discourage rolling. If you wake up face down once, do not panic — check for new pain, bleeding, or a sudden change in swelling, and simply reset your position.

How long the restriction lasts differs with the procedure and how firmly tissue has healed, so timelines vary by individual. Ask the specialist at your follow-up when side or stomach sleeping can safely resume.
